What’s next?

A note from our founder

We’ve spent most of 2023 re-aligning our programs and offerings so we can provide more value to our members. We plan to relaunch our paid member programs in 2024, and will be migrating platforms during this time. To support our efforts moving forward we are pursuing our first round of fundraising. You can learn more in our LinkedIn post.

In the meantime, we encourage you to join as a free member and sign up for our mailing list, where we will be sharing information on what’s next for Climate Designers during this transition.

We want to thank our existing paid members for your support. You are what’s keeping the lights on for us, and we wouldn’t be here without you. If you are not currently a paid member but are interested in supporting our work at this time, we welcome your support during this pivotal time for our organization.

If you are interested in being a part of what’s next, check out our volunteer opportunities. We are excited about what’s ahead, and co-creating the future of Climate Designers together with our members. We’d love to collaborate with you!

What our members are saying

Great to be among so many thoughtful and creative people. For my part I am on a quest to help the public embrace the reality of climate change so we can honestly address how it affects society and culture and then intentionally co-create the future world we wish to inhabit. Both tasks require great imagination, expert storytelling skills, and innovative design. The climate movement needs creatives of all kind to help society understand this moment in history. I need others creatives in my life for collaborating, dreaming, and scheming ways to evolve our thinking.

— Peterson Toscano, Sound Design and Storytelling

Climate change is a global problem which requires global actions on billions of levels. I believe that bottom-up initiatives have lots of potential. I’m here because I want to share my knowledge and skills as a product designer and a teacher, work on open-source projects educational projects related to sustainability and basically do whatever I can to contribute to positive changes.

— Anna Kavouras, Design Research and Teaching

I have always felt drawn to nature and biodiversity and now I feel the need to do something as a designer to protect and regenerate our planet. So, I’m hoping this community can help me define a path to create meaningful projects with sustainability as a main focus.

— Fernanda Burillo, Product Design

I was feeling a bit helpless and lost, wondering what to do with this intense drive to put my creativity to work. It often would bubble up as a feeling of impending doom, although I knew it was coming from a place of love for the planet. Like so many others, I've struggled a lot with that climate anxiety (and general anxiety), but finally turned a corner and am ready to turn that anxiety into action.

I was really encouraged when I stumbled on this page, and can't wait to connect with and learn from this group!

— Juliana Linder, Brand x Product

FAQ

  • We define design as any practice that directly affects the physical and digital world around us. Many who impact the design of our world, do not have “designer” in their title.

  • No—most of our members identify as some type of designer or creative person but we welcome anyone.

  • There are all types of designers from Graphics to Architecture to Design Research. You can see some of the disciplines of our featured designers here.

  • We expect you to get out of membership what you put in. There is no official time commitment but the more you interact with other members, attend events, and participate, the more you will learn and be inspired. We recommend attending at least one event a month and logging on to the online community a couple times a week.

  • If just participating isn’t enough for you, you can consider joining the Climate Designers core team or becoming a Chapter Leader. Email hello@climatedesigners.org and say hi!

  • Absolutely. We have many students, educators, and members at all different levels of learning. We encourage learning about Climate Design as early as possible in your design education!

  • We were founded in 2019.

  • Marc O’Brien and Sarah Harrison are the original founders of Climate Designers. Sarah is now pursuing other projects, and Marc is still running the day-to-day along with the help of our team.
